the 44th President of the United States...Bara...

President Barack Obama will hold the State of the Union address tonight starting at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PST. As usual, the speech will be covered by most major networks and traditional media outlets, but this year’s event will also have several additional features that point to both the President’s technology savvy and the growing global awareness of social media.

The White House has developed a Facebook application to share the event with the world’s larges online community.   Facebook users can comment on the event in real time and share thoughts and comments with friends and other viewers around the globe. Tonight’s event will also be presented on YouTube, the world’s largest online video community, where observers can submit questions through its citizen tube channel later this week. The address can also be watched on the White House’s own live feed as well as on CNN’s live feed channel, which can also be seen on your mobile phone.

In tonight’s State of the Union address, President Obama is likely to discuss many of the key topics on the minds of the nation’s residents, such as the ailing economy, the growing joblessness rate, proposed reforms in the banking industry and help for the middle class.

The ‘middle class’ assistance has been a topic of much discussion over the last few days. Expected to be within the President’s plan to help the middle class are additional tax credits for families with children and elder dependents, a cap on the amount of interest that can be charged by student loan lenders, help with child care costs and the option for employees to direct deposit funds from their paychecks directly into IRAs.

Some critics have argued that these middle class propositions don’t address the current pressing issue of job creation. However, several members of the cabinet have suggested the opposite, particular relative to the lowering of education costs. These adjustments make higher education more affordable for more students which can, in turn, create more competitive candidates for employment. Likewise, the proposed dollars for the health care industry is likely to stimulate the economy and create new job opportunities, as well.

The State of the Union address is sure to be a lively event. Will you be watching?
